ESSFTA takes great pride in our Juniors.

Juniors Events Coordinator:  Laurin Howard

ESSFTA invites all children to participate in all the events at our National Specialty Show. Agility, Obedience and Rally events offer “High Scoring Springer Handled by a Junior” Rosettes at the trial designated as the National Trial. We encourage Juniors to join the AKC Juniors program, but registration with AKC as a Junior is not required to participate in our events, except for the Junior Showmanship competition.

Every child under 18, who participates in any event at the National will receive aOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA commemorative Duffel Bag, donated by an anonymous donor. In order to assure we have enough bags, please let us know you are coming by filling out the contact form at the bottom of this page by Aug 22.

AKC has an active participation program for children between the ages of 9 and 18. The Junior Showmanship Program has been in effect for many years, rewarding Juniors in the Conformation Ring. In 2017 AKC Launched a new recognition program for Juniors in Performance Events.  To qualify for the AKC Awards, the Junior must be registered with AKC as a Junior.  Click New_AKC_Junior_Recognition_System_1 for an AKC brochure on the Junior Recognition Program.  Visit the AKC Website for information on Registering a Junior.

If you want to show your support for our juniors, you may contribute to the Juniors Program on the Financial Donations page.

Events specifically for Juniors:

  • Junior Showmanship Competition, Saturday, Sept 8, Judge Doug Johnson
  • Daily Handling Classes, open to any juniors or peewees interested

Deadline to  sign up: August 22, 2018

The Juniors Showcase will take place immediately following the Breeders Showcase, in a different ring. Each child will be introduced to the audience while they perform in the ring. The 2017 ESSFTA Junior of the Year award will be made during this event, as well as high-scoring junior in each performance event! However, the showcase itself is completely non-competitive!!

Peewees will be the first in the ring and won’t have to stay in. Each will receive a beautiful ribbon!! This will essentially be our peewee “competition” for this national, though it will be somewhat different than usual.

If a junior handler, they will move their dog in a circle, stack him, do a pattern, and go around to the end where they will stand with all the other participants.

Performance handlers will be asked to do whatever they do with their dog!! Agility dogs will do a short combination of tunnel, jump, teeter. or weaves. Obedience/rally dogs will do a heeling pattern. Hunt test dogs will retrieve dead birds (please bring your own dead bird from the hunt test – we will put it in a freezer somewhere!). Scent work dogs will make a find, tracking dogs can do a short track that we will set up right before the beginning of the showcase.

VISIT this page often. New Events will be added as the planning stages are completed.

Please fill out and submit the following contact form by Aug 22, so we know how many Duffel Bags to have, and how many to plan on for the workshop.
